Voyeurism as a definition is is the sexual interest in or practice of spying on people engaged in intimate behaviors, such as undressing, sexual activity, or other activity usually considered to be of a private nature. In popular imagination the term is used in a more general sense to refer to someone who habitually observes others without their knowledge, and there is no necessary implication of any sexual interest.
Voyeurism in my experience, can be split into two categories one being the sexual side and the other being more of an intimate approach to the photos often depicting family situations and children rather than the more sexual approach to photos and advertisements “sex sells” as depicted in the above photo by Terry Richardson. The more sexual side could also be split into categories such as fashion/advertising and photojournalism.
I’ve always loved voyeuristic photography and many of my favorite photographers are considered voyeurs unto their work. Such as Terry Richardson, Dash Snow, Ryan Mcginely, Nan Goldin, Richard Billingham
